Yamatoya is another excellent Japanese ramen chain shop that has opened up a location in Taipei. They originate from Yokohama, Japan. At first glance it may look like their menu has many ramen choices, but in fact they only have three different kinds of broth: salt, soy sauce, and their dipping broth (the menu didn't say what it consisted of, but it tasted like tonkotsu with fish to me). I like how they specialize in only three different kinds of broth because places that specialize in fewer choices tend to make those choices better since they have less items to focus on, and Yamatoya definitely is one of the places that does it right. Both their salt and soy sauce broths are classically simple in taste and very delicious. Their golden dipping ramen broth is also very delicious. I thought all three of their broth choices were delicious -- you can't go wrong with whatever you order at Yamatoya.
They have a nice selection of appetizers, rice bowls, and one of the best desserts that I've ever had at a ramen restaurant: Japanese Brown Sugar Ice Cream. I had the Barbecued Rice Bowl because their recommended rice bowl, Mayo Egg Pork Rice Bowl, was sold out for the day. They only make so many of them a day, so if you come late in the day, as I did on all of my five visits, it's common for it to be sold out for the day. However, I wasn't disappointed because the Barbecued Rice Bowl that I got was very delicious. Moving on to appetizers: I typically try a ramen places' Japanese fried chicken, but I decided to try other items this time since they had other options that most other ramen places don't have. Of the appetizers I tried, the potstickers and deep fried oysters were my favorite choices.
Yamatoya's menu is only in Chinese and Japanese, so I translated and explained the menu in English in the picture section below for you. I'll also go over the process of ordering their ramen in this section. There are three main menu pages of ramen choices. The first two pages are ramen that can be ordered with either salt or soy sauce broth in a medium or large sized ramen bowl. Both broths are delicious, but I liked the soy sauce a little more because it was a little more flavorful. You can see all the differences of the ingredients from the pictures that are shown on their menu: the first page's ramen choices all come with more seaweed and the top two have more pork slices. The second page's ramen choices have less seaweed and less pork slices, except for the top choice, which makes them cheaper. The last main menu page of ramen includes their three golden dipping broth ramen choices. As I said above, they don't say what type of dipping broth it is, but it tasted like tonkotsu and fish to me. Only the top choice comes with seared pork slices. Everything else that's different from the three dipping broth ramen choices can easily be seen in the pictures on the menu: amount of pork slices, egg, and seaweed. As with the other ramen menu pages, you choose if you want a medium or large proportioned ramen set. Then on the back of the menu, you choose three three levels of different elements: hardness of noodles, saltiness of broth, and oiliness of broth. Yamatoya has a star in each section they prefer, which I follow, except I like to up it one more in the salt section because I'm not Taiwanese and like more salt in my food.
