Xianlaoman was first established in 2003 and currently has six locations in Beijing at the time of this review. They opened up a location in Taipei in 2012 after two years of preparation and five Taiwanese chefs going to the Beijing headquarters for training.
The main draw to Xianlaoman is their Lao Man Dumpling (老滿餃子) recipe that dates back to the Qing Dynasty. The skin on their dumplings is thicker than normal. I believe the reason behind the thicker skin is because the dumplings are so packed full of meat, seasoning, and meat broth that the mixture needs to be safely encapsulated. Their dumplings are the most flavorful and juiciest that I've ever tasted. You don't need to dip their dumplings in sauce because they already contain enough sauce and flavor—and this is a sauce-whore speaking. I specifically recommend their lamb and beef dumplings, but all their dumplings are delicious.
Besides exquisite dumplings, they have a large, delicious array of traditional Beijing cuisine. Their beef pie is one other menu option that can't be passed up. It's filled with flavorful beef, onions, and seasoning. When your chopsticks penetrate the pie, a large amount of aroma-filled broth will spill out, conveying its delectable capabilities of taunting you to return to Xianlaoman for another beefy fix when the day is done. Trust me, you'll have beefy-broth pies and delightful dancing dumpling in your dreams the night after a visit to Xianlaoman.
Vegetarian options: The vegetarian items are clearly marked on their menu with a green symbol. Bok Choy Bamboo Black Mushroom and Vermicelli Dumplings (NT$180), Noodles with Sesame Sauce in Beijing Style (NT$130), Cabbage Salad with Sesame Sauce (NT$140), Chinese Cabbage Marinated in Mustard Sauce (NT$140), Marinated Cucumber in Vinegar Sauce (NT$70), Marinated Cucumber in Sesame Sauce (NT$150), Lotus Root Marinated in Sweet Sauce (NT$150), Peanuts Marinated in Dark Vinegar Sauce (NT$100), and Mixed Sliced Potato Salad (NT$80).
