SoHo Pasta 蘇活義大利麵坊 is one of those Taiwanese-style Italian restaurants that works well. They make yummy Italian spaghetti and risotto. I'm also very pleased to say that they don't overcook their spaghetti; it was served al dente (firm to the bite) on all of my visits. SoHo Pasta knows the correct amount of cooking time for all their ingredients, leaving nothing too soggy or crunchy -- good attention to detail. They give you a good amount of ingredients and their proportion size is great, especially given the price, which is cheaper than most other places that are on the same quality level as SoHo.
One of the biggest problems about most Taiwanese-style spaghetti restaurants is that the sauce is watered down and bland. Most of SoHo Pasta's sauces are runny, but most of them aren't bland. However, they provide salt, pepper, Parmesan cheese, and chili powder, so one can easily work around the sauces that are too bland, while at the same time, not over-seasoning their dishes for the locals' taste. I was frightened when I saw the watery sauce on my plate the first time I dined at SoHo Pasta, but was pleasantly surprised with my first bite. Just as long as there is flavor in the sauce -- and there is in most of their sauces -- the runniness doesn't become a big issue. To work around the runny sauce issue, scoop up some sauce with your spoon after you've put a fork load of spaghetti in your mouth.
I was reluctant to try their risotto dishes, but I wanted to try one of them for this review. I'm so glad that I did because it was delicious. I was afraid that it would be boring and bland, but it was very flavorful and tasty till the last bite. Since then I've tried some of their other risotto dishes and found them all to be great. They do a very nice job at seasoning the risotto. They make one of the best risottos that I've had in Taipei.
Free tea with sugar comes with each meal. They also have sugarless lemon water. If you want more, you can refill your cup yourself. I would much rather do this than pay a 10% service charge; nicely done SoHo. There is a B combo for each dish, which adds your choice of one of their five soups for NT$50 more. The soup by itself costs NT$70. They also offer the option of paying NT$50 more to get a larger proportion. However, I can eat a lot and was easily satisfied with their normal serving size. So having never upgraded the size, I'm not sure exactly how much more is given. Also, they give you a good amount of ingredients with your spaghetti; they definitely don't skimp.
Vegetarian Options: Their vegetarian dishes are in green text and marked with an asterisk symbol on the menu, which can be seen in the picture section below. However, I'll list them here regardless: Pine Nuts, Basil and Garlic with Chili Oil (NT$200), Fresh Tomatoes, Mushroom and Cheese with Tomato Sauce (NT$200), Seasonal Vegetables and Bell Peppers with Olive Oil (NT$200), Flaked Almonds, Asparagus and Raisins with Cheese and Cream Sauce (NT$230), Sausage and Oyster Mushroom Pumpkin Risotto (NT$230), Thyme, Assorted Mushrooms, Pine Nuts and Seasonal Vegetables Risotto (NT$270), and all of their five soup choices (NT$70 single order, or NT$50 with combo meal).
