After trying a very delicious Shuang Yuan Cheng sesame wedding cake at my first Taiwanese ex-girlfriend's wedding, I decided to make a trip to Tamsui to review them. It was really just an excuse to buy a lot of wedding cake and mooncake, both of which I love and never get tired of eating. They have different types of sesame wedding cake, and I must have bought the inferior one because it wasn't nearly as good as the one I received at the wedding.
Shuang Yuan Cheng Bakery makes some good items, but I've had better at other traditional shops that I've already reviewed. The only item that I would highly recommend at Shuang Yuan Cheng would be their cake with plum and pineapple -- both wedding cake and mooncake. Well, also the quality sesame wedding cake, whichever the best one is of their sesame selection. The combination of plum and pineapple cake go great together, and when they also add egg yolk to these two ingredients in their wedding cake, it becomes even more delicious. I'd also have to say that their large variety of mini-Cantonese-style mooncakes are one of the best things about this particular traditional Chinese pastry shop.
They offer samples of their wedding cakes only. Their labels are only in Chinese. On my visit, their customer service was not very good; I'm sure you've experienced it when you're treated like they don't really want you there, don't want to help you even though you want to buy their stuff, and just want you to buy stuff and leave. Anyway, that was my impression, and I'm not talking about help with translating, as I recognized a lot of the Chinese characters since it's food that I've had often, and when I didn't know, my Google translator app did a good enough job for me to understand the items. Keep in mind that I gave them a 4-star review based completely on their products and didn't include their customer service skills -- or lack there of -- in my assessment.
When I'm in Tamsui in the future and want wedding cake or mooncake, I'll return to one of my favorite places, Sān Xié Chéng 三協成, instead of going back to Shuang Yuan Cheng, unless I want to buy that one great item from them: Plum Pineapple Wedding Cake.
Below is a Google translation of Chinese on their website about section. Since it's a Google translation, the sentence structure is completely messed up, but still understandable for the most part.
