Selfish Burger opened on July 15, 2016. They also have a stand at Commune A7, which I didn't try because I wanted to solely review their actual location. After seven visits and trying every burger on their menu -- except for the blue cheeseburger because I'm not a blue cheese fan -- I'm ready to write a review.
They use 100% U.S. Choice grade American chuck beef, which some people love and others hate, with 20% fat in the meat. They say they grind their beef daily at their store so it's fresh. "Local ingredients are included into the menu...With seasonal Taiwanese craft beers on tap to pair with burgers."
Their burgers aren't small, but they're definitely not big, so I guess that puts them in the medium range. I really don't like how they don't serve complimentary fries with their burgers, especially since the size of the burger and price warrants doing such. Burger restaurants in Taipei have picked up a bad habit of not serving free fries with their burgers; it's really stupid because a burger is traditionally served with fries! Whenever Taipei restaurants find a way to charge more for something, they'll do it; for example, the 10% service charge at places where there isn't service. At least Selfish Burger doesn't charge a service fee.
They have some creative burgers, some of which are delicious, some pretty good, and some terrible. I only thought the Maple Chestnut Squash and the Apple & Cinnamon Chicken were awful (read their critiques in the photo section for details). My three favorite burgers of theirs were the Smokey & Spicy that packs quite a spicy kick, the Peach Pork that is a sweet delight, and the Double Classic for its juicy meat and cheese.
After you choose a burger, you choose which of the two buns you want for it: Sweet Potato Brioche or Bamboo Charcoal Bun. I don't find either one of them to be delicious, but the Sweet Potato Brioche is pretty good -- I didn't like the taste and texture of the Bamboo Charcoal Bun. Then you can choose a combo for your burger if you wish, giving you a "savings" on snacks, beer, other drinks, or dessert. If you don't get full easily, you'll find that the burger by itself won't be enough to comfortably fulfill your appetite, since their beef patties aren't that large. The combos -- and some other things -- on the menu are only in Chinese, so I have translated it for you in the photo section.
Their milkshakes are good, but are overpriced for the size, which is typical in Taipei. Their local craft beer is well-priced. I'm not a beer drinker, but I know plenty of people who would like the idea of a place that couples burgers with local craft beer, so I think that was a nice idea of theirs. They have one limited-time burger that seems to change every few months. Among my seven visits I tried two different limited-time burgers: Fig Burger and Sakura. Both were good, especially the Fig Burger, which I think was good enough to be on their menu -- it should replace the spot on the menu of the horrible Maple Chestnut Squash; actually, they should replace that burger with a vegetarian burger that vegetarians will enjoy.
Vegetarian options: Maple Chestnut Squash (NT$210), Milkshakes (NT$140), Local Craft Beer (NT$150), Wedge Salad (NT$100), Two Fries in One (NT$60), and Fried Onion Rings (NT$60).
