I thought the day would never come, but I finally ate at a Japanese chain ramen restaurant that opened up a location in Taipei that I didn't like. Besides their miso potato pork ramen, which is listed as the number one choice on their menu, I found all their other ramen dishes ranging from OK to bad. Even though their number one dish is good, it still wasn't anything special or close to being delicious -- I'd still choose a different ramen location rather than consuming it. Most of their ramen choices are bland to the point of not being enjoyable. The miso dipping ramen was the worst ramen that I've ever had in my life because the miso had an awful taste to it. The fact that I'm a miso-lover acts as evidence in accusing this dish as being abominable. Therefore, I didn't even bother trying their other dipping ramen choice: Miso Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐) Dipping Ramen. Since they don't have the mapo tofu condensed broth at their Japanese locations, it makes me wonder if they've changed the taste of their other ramen choices for their Taipei location. It's possible that their locations in Japan serve acceptable or even good ramen.
I believe the whole idea of Sapporo Engine using a flame thrower to scorch their ramen dishes is a gimmick that's used to cheaply beckon customers, because it doesn't appear to be making their ramen taste good. Also, there is probably a good reason why other ramen shops didn't follow suit and start doing it as well.
The three side dishes I tried were all good, but nobody goes to a ramen restaurant to solely eat sides, so it's irrelevant.
Luckily, there are many outstanding ramen restaurants in the same area as Sapporo Engine, so if you're a samurai craving ramen who's caught in the area, don't commit seppuku (切腹) (plunging a blade into the abdomen and drawing the blade from left to right, slicing the abdomen open), because there are other fine ramen shops in walking distance that will not bring shame to your family's name if you ingest their ramen.
