Sanji Ramen was a big surprise to me; I never thought that I'd ever try a Japanese ramen shop that was so bad. I partook of their spicy ramen on my first visit. It was too oily and lacked any real flavor other than a less-than-desirable spicy taste. After my first visit I wasn't planning on returning or reviewing Sanji, but I ended up giving them another try when I was in the area, planning on eating at Ichiran, but decided--as I usually do--to eat somewhere else instead of waiting in a long line. Sanji just happened to be the closest ramen place that I hadn't reviewed yet, so I gave them another shot. I ordered the soy sauce ramen and was equally as displeased as I was with their spicy ramen: the broth was worse than mediocre and tasted like something from a convenience store.
After that I decided to suffer through two more visits to Sanji in order to get enough info for a review. Besides, I once put myself on a quest to review every Japanese ramen shop in Taipei, but so many of them ended up opening around Taipei, that I don't know if I'll ever fulfill that endeavor. Anyway, I wasn't going to let Sanji be the reason I failed, so I stumbled headlong into their abominable broths to spew out a review.
On my third visit I ordered the black sesame broth ramen, and it was easily the worst black sesame ramen that I've ever had at a Japanese ramen shop. I thought that at some point Sanji would redeem themselves at least a little bit with one of the ramen dishes that I tried, but they kept getting worse and worse. Luckily, on my fourth, and last visit, I ordered the tonkotsu tsukemen (condensed broth with noodle on the side you dip into the broth). It wasn't great, but at least it wasn't horrible; it landed somewhere between okay to not-so-good.
If you find yourself at Sanji, for some reason, like a nightmare where you're forced at gun-point, I recommend ordering one of their tsukemen dishes, because it doesn't taste like utter shit. Better yet, just go one more floor down (the 4th floor of ATT 4 FUN) and eat at Nantsuttei.
