After my second trip to Hong Kong I was longing to find a delicious Hong Kong tea restaurant in Taipei to fulfill my cravings, but San Fa HK Style Restaurant fell short. For Westerners, Hong Kong tea restaurants would be better described as Hong Kong cafes; there is way more than just tea being served--in fact, most people order a mix of coffee and milk tea (yuanyang) instead of just tea, anyway--there are many breakfast items, snack-like items, and cafe-style main dishes. Most HK tea restaurants also offer some dim sum choices, but unfortunately, San Fa HK Style Restaurant doesn't. Well, they have five items under Snacks on the menu, which are served dim sum style, but only one of them is an actual dim sum-like item: deep-fried bean-curd roll with shrimp and pork, which was very tasty by the way.
There were many things about San Fa HK Style that made it clear to me that they weren't very authentic, and had a big Taiwanese influence to their dishes. I was first shocked to find out that they serve honey instead of maple syrup with their French toast. Don't get me wrong, I love honey, but maple syrup is supposed to be served with French toast traditionally. Also, even though they're both sweet liquids, they do have a different taste, and maple syrup just tastes better with French toast. So that was a huge mess up considering how this item is one of the quintessential dishes at HK tea restaurants. The rice bowl also shouted Taiwanese-version with it's few toppings and different meats being served than what was stated on the menu--a habit some Taiwanese restaurants have when they're out of a particular item and switch it with something else or even omit it entirely from the dish, all without notifying the customer before or after the dish is served.
San Fa HK Style has a nice atmosphere and their food is pretty good, it's just not authentic Hong Kong food. If you go there knowing what you're stepping into, you may be satisfied with your experience instead of disappointed. Because they are a HK tea restaurant and not a Taiwanese-Hong Kong-style restaurant, I have rated them accordingly, comparing them to other HK tea restaurants in Taipei.
Vegetarian options: French toast (NT$50), HK Style pineapple bun w/ Butter (NT$55), hot coffee milk tea (NT$75)--all the best things at a HK tea restaurant. Also, Fried Noodles w/ Vegetables (NT$145), Fried Vegetables with Fermented Bean-curd Sauce (NT$135), Fried Bean Spouts w/ XO Sauce (NT$110), Pan-fried Turnip cake (NT$95), Pan-fried Taro Cake (NT$95), everything under Desserts on the menu, and some of the items under Toast/Sandwich on the menu (in the pictures below).
