There are not a lot of Middle Eastern restaurants in Taipei, for sure, so I was happy to get my hummus fix at Sababa Pita Bar, a small little cafe with Middle Eastern decor, pictures, and food.
I tried the Plata Sababa, Tasting Plata (which is a sampling of all the platas: Plata Sababa, Hummus Tel Aviv, and Moroccan Hummus), Falafel Pita, Moroccan Burger Pita, Egyptian Cigar appetizer, and baklava dessert. I come from Seattle, USA where the world drawing job opportunities have created a multi-ethnical restaurant experience; Seattle has plenty of good Middle Eastern restaurants, authentically delicious pitas, and top of the line hummus to be bought at Trader Joe's, a very popular organic supermarket chain. So I know what authentic and excellent pitas and hummus tastes like.
To tell you the truth, Sababa didn't completely satisfy me and left me longing for my favorite pita bars and Trader Joe's hummus back home. I still recommend it because the hummus and pita dipping bread is good enough for when you're in Taipei and don't have a lot of options in this realm. The Egyptian Cigar, a deep fried spicy cheddar cigar-shaped wrap, was very delicious, even if it was overpriced: two of them (small), both cut in half for a total of NT$120. The hummus was pretty good, like I said, good enough if you are looking for hummus in Taipei. The baklava dessert was OK; too much cinnamon and not enough honey. My mom use to make baklava often with a recipe she got from her good friend who's Greek. Again, it's small, OK, and overpriced, I would not order it again.
The falafels on the hummus plates and in the pita where completely without taste and very dry tasting. I love falafels so this was a huge disappointment. None of their pitas have tzatziki sauce which is the best thing a pita/gyro could have. Both pitas I tried of theirs were really bland, dry, and almost tasteless -- I would definitely not recommend them. I would stick to their appetizers and hummus plates or maybe try one of their pitas with chicken, lamb, or roasted eggplant which I didn't try.
Vegetarian Fare: Plata Sababa, Hummus Tel Aviv, Falafel Pita, Falafel Banadoora Pita, Eggplant Pita, Big Bowl Salad: Arabian, Sultan, and Cyprus.
