Ramen Nagi first opened in September 2004 as a small ramen shop in Shinjuku, Tokyo, and was only open on Tuesdays. It soon began having long queues and became one of the most popular eateries in the area. Ramen Nagi Universal Noodle officially opened it's first store in June 2006 in Shibuya, Tokyo. At the time of this review, Nagi has 7 locations in Tokyo, 5 stores in Taiwan (4 in Taipei and 1 in Taichung), 1 store in Indonesian and the Philippines, and they say they'll continue to expand overseas. They've won several awards, including being voted best ramen and champion for Tokyo Ramen of the Year Award in 2013.
Nagi quickly became one of the most popular Japanese ramen chains in Taipei. They offer more customization than other ramen restaurants by giving their customers a menu where their personal, desired choices can be circled. They offer four different pork soup bases and a fifth limited soup base that changes weekly. Their four pork soup bases are:
1. Butao King (豚王): award winning tonkotsu pork broth prepared in the traditional method.
2. Red King (赤王): spicy chili oil and garlic with barbecued pork, topped by a miso-infused, minced pork ball with cayenne on top.
3. Black King (黑王): black squid ink in a garlic and pork velvety broth with barbecued pork, topped by a minced pork ball infused with black sesame and Nagi spices.
4. Green King (翠王): a mix of fresh basil, olive oil, and barbecued pork in the tonkotsu pork broth with grated Parmesan cheese.
Instead of going into detail about the menu options, check out their menu in the picture section below (3rd row down in the middle) for a visual explanation, which is always better than words. You can see what my friend and I ordered on our first visit at the Ximending location (西門店). Taipei's Ximending is the Shinjuku of Tokyo, where Nagi's first small shop opened in Japan, so it was very fitting for me to have first dined at this location in Taiwan. Several months later, I visited their Zhongxiao location near the Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station (捷運忠孝復興站). I have tried and thoroughly enjoyed all of their four ramen soup bases; you can't go wrong with any ramen choice at Nagi. Nagi's ramen is more oily, salty, and richer than other Japanese ramen shops, so if you don't like rich and powerful food, circle "light" under thickness of taste and sauce on your personal menu. Nagi is definitely one of my favorite Japanese ramen choices in Taipei.
Vegetarian options: Every soup base is pork flavored, so Nagi isn't a restaurant for vegetarians.
