LBC (Liquid Bread Company) was opened up by the same owner who operates one of the best (if not the best) Western bread shops in Taipei: Purebread Bakery. This is why the bread of LBC's sandwiches is better than any other sandwich shop's in Taipei, by a landslide. The Taiwanese owner has spent a considerable amount of time in America; this is why he knows what excellent sandwiches and bread tastes like. He wanted to bring both of these things to Taipei to fill this particular culinary void, and at the same time educate Taiwanese about proper bread and sandwiches. There's no doubt that the Westerners in Taipei praise his products and validate their authenticity.
I found out about Purebread from one of my French friends, whom was raving about it: she was completely ecstatic about having found a quality bread shop in Taipei, for she had been badly missing quality bread since arriving in Taiwan. So if you're European, or an American or Canadian who knows and appreciates top-notch bread, and have been dying to get your hands on some proper bread whilst in Taipei, let Purebread Bakery fill that void.
OK, back to Liquid Bread Company; this isn't a review for Purebread. After having been told about LBC and their superb sandwiches, I was still reluctant to pay them a visit after having viewed their prices, which were a little too steep (at the time) for me. However, after being told that LBC made the best sandwiches in Taipei by several people--people whose tastes have been validated in the past by my extreme vetting process of who-doesn't-know-and-who-knows-what-the-fuck-their-talking-about (its a tried and true method I've developed over the years while cooing about cuisine from illegal-Taipei rooftops in the dead of night with only stray cats as companions)—I was too curious not to pay them a visit.
After having visited LBC, I found out what all the hype was about: the Tuna Melt that I had couldn't have been any better. I returned a few times to try some of their other creations. Luckily, on one of my visits, they adjusted their sandwich size (getting rid of the half- or full-size sandwich option) to one full-sized sandwich priced at what their half-size sandwich used to cost. I was told by the staff that the new full-sized sandwich's size is between what their half and full sandwich used to be (to me, it looks much closer to being the size of their old full sandwich and much bigger than the old half sandwich). Therefore, the adjustment lowered their prices quite a bit. So if you haven't visited or haven't returned to LBC because of their prices, it's now safe to return and luxuriate in their savory sandwiches from heaven. (The sandwiches that I didn't order, or reorder, after the size change are listed as half or full sandwich without prices in the photo section below.)
LBC only uses quality ingredients—it's not solely their bread that is of fine quality. After returning to Liquid Bread several times, having my way with almost all of their sandwich options, several sandwiches came forward with rape accusations against me. But don't worry, I settled out of court and won't be doing any jail-time, so I'll be able to continue to bring you the culinary reviews of Taipei that you have come to depend on. And in my defense, all my sandwich exposés were consequential, I'll have you know; it was a sandwich conspiracy orchestrated by the Illuminati to smear my good name. But I digress. After partaking of almost all their sandwich choices, I found my favorites to be their Pastrami, Patty Melt, and Tuna Melt. In fact, it's the best pastrami, patty melt, and tuna melt that I've had in Taipei. I enjoyed all their sandwiches, but these were the sexiest sandwiches of the lot. They were born to tantalize and titillate the taste bud receptors.
Vegetarian options: Animal Friendly [sandwich] (NT$155), Berry Grilled Cheese (NT$130), and Cold Side options.
