UPDATE: I knew this at the time but forgot to mention it: I'm aware of the scandals that have been going on in Taiwan where companies have been reposting their expiration dates. It is 100% clear after eating Li-Ji's pastries that they indeed practiced this devious scam. Judging by how hard and stale the ingredients were in the pastries I purchased, especially the eggs, they could've even been a year past their true expiration dates. Li-Ji probably sells most of it's products to tourists who will leave the country and find out too late that they bought expired products, or simply not be familiar how traditional Chinese & Taiwanese pastries are supposed to taste like and think that they just don't taste good and never buy them again anywhere. I urge everyone to blacklist Li-Ji and any other company that practices this highly devious scam.
I never thought it was possible to make such horrible traditional Chinese pastries until I tried Li-Ji. 台中犁記餅店 Li-Ji Taichung Pastry was established in 1894. They specialize in mooncake and also sell pineapple cake. They have all different types of mooncake: big mooncake, small mooncake, big Cantonese-style mooncake, Cantonese-style mooncake, and small Cantonese-style mooncake. Okay, so really they have two major types of mooncake and different sizes of them.
Li-Ji was the first traditional pastry shop I went to where most of the mooncake I purchased had to be bought in boxes of three -- you couldn't just buy one of them. For a pastry shop that specializes in mooncake, you'd think that they'd try hard not to make the worst mooncake in the country. I kid you not, the mooncake I bought at Wellcome (the supermarket) tasted better. I'm not embellishing in the least; Li-Ji's mooncakes are an offence to the founding fathers of mooncake in China. Every mooncake I ate of theirs tasted very stale, like it was months past the expiration date, but according to their expiration labels, none of them were expired. The outside and the inside ingredients all tasted dry and stale, and it wouldn't have taken an expert to discern such: It was plainly visible to the eye and to the taste buds. The egg yolk in the mooncakes tasted very hard and flavorless. Who would sell such abominable pastries of doom? Besides being stale-tasting, their pastries didn't contain much flavor and were quite bland, if not just plain horrible. To top it off, their mooncake is also the most expensive that I've bought so far. What a waste of money and stomach room.
Their pineapple cake was the only thing that was redeemable about their shop. They weren't amazing, but they were quite good. They had a smaller, less-quality version and a normal-sized version of better quality. I don't even know why they bother making the smaller, less-quality pineapple cakes. Their normal-sized pineapple cakes are the only thing that's worth purchasing at Li-Ji. However, I don't see the point in buying pineapple cake at a place that specializes in mooncake and makes the worst mooncakes in the country -- buy your pineapple cake somewhere else.
Again, I'm just completely flabbergasted that a traditional pastry shop could fail so majorly and produce mooncake that is way worse than a typical supermarket's mooncake.
