Katsusei 伊勢路-勝勢日式豬排 ended up being the best tonkatsu (deep-fried, breaded pork cutlet) restaurant that I've ever been to. It's a Japanese chain restaurant with their main location being in the Mie Prefecture of Japan near Ise Bay, which is known for its seafood since ancient times, and is 2.5 km north of the iconic Ise Shrine, a 7th-century Shinto shrine complex with multiple temples and grounds that are surrounded by a forest and river. They opened up their first location in Taiwan in October of 2014 to offer their culinary cultural delight abroad.
Tonkatsu (とんかつ, pork cutlet), is a Japanese dish which consists of a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet. There are two main types: pork fillet (tenderloin) and pork loin. They are both quality cuts from pork. If you want to know all the differences between pork tenderloin and loin, check out this website. If not, just know that both will be quality at a tonkatsu restaurant and you shouldn't base your tonkatsu decision on the difference.
Most of their menu items come in a set that includes along with your main meal a choice of white or purple rice, seaweed miso or pork miso soup, and tsukemono (漬物, pickled things). The best thing to order at a tonkatsu restaurant is their tonkatsu, of course, and the best tonkatsu on the menu is the TORO tonkatsu. It will cost more than the other tonkatsu choices, but it will be well worth the extra amount of money, that is if the tonkatsu restaurant is quality, which Katsusei definitely is. Therefore, the Deep Fried Kurobuta Pork TORO Loin Set (260g) (NT$460) is the best thing to order at Katsusei; it's far better than any other tonkatsu choice on the menu and is the best tonkatsu that I've had in my life. It possesses a powerful, rich pork flavor and comes with fantastic fat. Its 260-gram size will ensure that you're full and satisfied at the end of your meal.
Tonkatsu originated in Japan in the 19th century. It used to be commonly beef; the pork version was invented in 1899 at a restaurant in Tokyo called Rengatei. It was originally a type of yōshoku (洋食): Japanese versions of European cuisine, but has since become a unique, traditional Japanese dish. The meat is usually salted, lightly floured, dipped into beaten eggs, coated with panko (bread crumbs), and deep fried. Tonkatsu is generally served with shredded cabbage. It's typically eaten with a type of thick sauce called tonkatsu sauce or simply sōsu (sauce), and karashi (mustard). It's usually served with rice, miso soup, and tsukemono (pickled things). It may also be used in a sandwich or in combination with curry and rice. The curry version is usually deep-fried chicken instead of pork.
Vegetarian options: Tonkatsu restaurants are all about meat and aren't for vegetarians. If a restaurant made a quality vegetarian version, it could be very popular.
