Jiu Zhen Nan's headquarters is in Kaohsiung, but they also have some locations throughout Taipei. I chose to visit their location in the Regent Galleria in the Regent Taipei Hotel because it looked the most impressive and I've never reviewed anything in the Regent Taipei before.
Upon entering their store and taking a look around, I was a bit leery because they only sold their pastries in gift boxes -- individual pastries couldn't be purchased. I had only visited traditional pastry shops where I could buy individual pastries until the last traditional shop that I visited: Li-Ji Taichung Pastry 台中犁記餅店, which sold me expired pastries with falsified expiration labels. Therefore, I thought maybe the traditional pastry shops that only sold pastries in gift boxes and not individually were inferior to their counterparts and targeted tourists. Luckily, Jiu Zhen Nan's pastries were good. I recommend their mooncake and especially their wedding cake, which is the best item they produce. Their pineapple cake was clearly subpar, so I don't recommend buying pineapple cake at their establishment.
Jiu Zhen Nan wasn't as good as most of the shops that I've visited that sell their pastries separately, so I guess that theory (stated above) is still pending. I'm almost certain that the finalized evidence will show that there's a substantially higher chance of receiving pastries that land somewhere between bad and okay if a shop doesn't sell most of their pastry items individually.
Jiu Zhen Nan has some of the most luxurious packaging that I've ever seen from a pastry shop. They kind of remind me of the Starbucks of traditional pastries, but their pastries are good unlike Starbucks' coffee.
"Han pastry originated from the rice-eating culture of the agricultural Han dynasty. After two millennia of development and improvement, it has become the traditional wedding pastry among all Chinese ethnicities. In the late Qing dynasty, the Lees opened a Han pastry shop in the old Tainan city, making them one of the earliest Han pastry makers in Taiwan. In the early Japanese colonial period, the Lees finalized the official registration for their Han pastry shop, and began running the business as a modern enterprise. In the 1920s, Master Chef Hsiang founded 'Zhen Nan Pastry Shop' in Kaohsiung after acquiring the skills of making Han pastry in Tainan. The shop became the founding store of Jiu Zhen Nan in Kaohsiung. After the 1960s, Western pastry became popular. In addition to using rice as material, flour was also used in making Han pastry. Traditional Han pastry incorporated Western ingredients and flavors and gradually evolved into the pastry of contemporary taste. Jiu Zhen Nan reached the height of its reputation in Kaohsiung. Social celebrities and the general public all asked for Jiu Zhen Nan's pastry at their weddings. In the 1970s, Taiwanese people's purchasing power increased due to the economic boom. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, people queued up for Jiu Zhen Nan's Taiwanese mooncake as an essential gift for friends and relatives. In 1995, the current President H.C. Lee took over the family pastry business. He insisted on the ancestor's instructions to create the finest pastry by hand. With modern entrepreneurial management the brand of Jiu Zhen Nan was rejuvenated and expanded. Jiu Zhen Nan -- a contemporary and international brand of Han pastry."
