Herban Kitchen & Bar is one of those few Western vegetarian restaurants in Taipei that goes beyond being in line with the other typical boring vegetarian restaurants and buffets. It's nestled in a small alley-esque strip away from the hustle and bustle of the city, providing a nice little urban oasis. The atmosphere couples with its location, doubling in its chilled vibe potency. It's a nice place to find herbs in the urban local of Taipei, and/or sip a nice glass of red or white wine or down a beer or two. Like many restaurant spaces in the heart of Taipei, the commercial rent isn't cheap, so menu prices are going to reflect this unfortunate disposition; if they didn't, a profit wouldn't be attainable, and such a restaurant would have to close down. So keep that in mind when you're eating in a downtown Taipei restaurant such as Herban Kitchen & Bar.
The food at Herban Kitchen is hit and miss. Of course, this is all a matter of opinion, but for those of you who have followed my advice in the past and found that my tastes are similar to yours, you can rely on my recommendations and warnings. The best items reside under these menu categories: pasta, grilled sandwiches, desserts, and power shakes. First, I'll cover pasta. When ordering pasta, you can choose between the regular linguine, gluten-free gnocchi, or spinach fettuccine. I didn't try the latter, so I can't speak about it, but I can say that the linguine is great (they cook it al dente), and the gnocchi should be avoided at all cost. The 50% Italian in me loves classic gnocchi, so I found their gluten-free substitute gnocchi to be an abomination. The Spicy Thai Linguine and the Puttanesca were winning dishes; you can't go wrong with either of these items. I can't speak for their Primavera because that was the dish that I tried that was ordered with the gluten-free gnocchi substitute. The Creamy Pesto was a huge failure. I love both cream sauces and pesto. This spaghetti dish lacked the rich creamy taste that's needed for a good cream sauce (it was bland), and the pesto was weak enough to almost be completely disregarded. I don't recommend that dish.
I tried and liked two of their four grilled sandwiches: Classic Italian and Super Cheesy.
The Classic Italian was my favorite because it contained classic Italian elements and was served with Ciabatta bread -- my favorite type of Italian bread. The Super Cheesy was pretty good, but I wish that it contained more garlic aioli sauce to give it a more powerful punch. I found no disappointments in the grilled sandwich items I tried, but I wouldn't say that either sandwiches were completely delicious.
I enjoyed all of their homemade desserts that I tried: Ganache, Tiramisu, and Lemon Tart.
If you're a chocolate lover, I'd label their Ganache as a must order. Their tiramisu was one of the best that I've had in Taipei. Their lemon tart wasn't as powerfully tarty as I'd prefer, but was still very enjoyable for sure. It's quite apparent that they put a lot of love and dedication in their homemade desserts.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of their power shakes. They're quite exquisite!
I tried their moussaka on a prior visit where my photos didn't turn out well due to having a bad camera, so you'll not find a picture of it below, but it was one of the dishes that I recommend. The other item under the main courses section of the menu, Vegan Tempeh Burger, was too bland for my taste. Items under Herban's other menu sections are spoken about below where I normally critique dishes: in the picture section.
Vegetarian & Vegan options: As per their menu's breakdown, all vegan dishes, dishes that include garlic and onions, and spicy dishes are clearly marked.
