G'day Cafe opened up in 1994. The owner, Barbara Chiang (江美娟), is an Orchid Island native. She was taught by her Western friends how to cook western food. They must have been good teachers, because G'day Cafe is better than most of the myriad of western restaurants run by Taiwanese in Taipei. Don't get G'day Cafe confused for the restaurant failure named Good Day. Once you're seated, you're given a menu to check your desired items and return to the front desk when you're finished. There is water near the front desk for you to help yourself to. You may pay for unlimited black coffee located next to the water that you can pour yourself. The self service creates a relaxed atmosphere without waiters constantly interrupting your conversation. Of course, not having to pay the 10% service charge is nice, too. Especially since restaurants and cafes in Taiwan don't even give that money to the waiters like they do in the West; in Taiwan, it's just a trick to have the customer pay 10% more to the owner. Thank you G'day Cafe for not being deceiving like so many other cafes in Taipei.
G'day offers a pretty wide selection of homemade style western food. Although I haven't tried it all and can't speak for all their items, I can say that some of their dishes are delicious enough for me to keep revisiting. I'd have to say that when I think of G'day Cafe, the first thing that enters my mind is great Mexican food. Their Mexican food is what I crave for sometimes, beckoning me to pay them another visit. The Mexican dishes don't come with Spanish rice and melted cheese on refried beans on the side, but the main fair is well proportioned and contains quality ingredients and seasoning; there is no skimping on the meat at G'day Cafe for their Mexican meals. [UPDATE on October 15, 2016]: I don't know if they changed cooks or forgot to make it correctly, but they didn't mix in the taco seasoning at all in the enchilada we ordered (the same thing might happen to their burrito), which made one of their best dishes completely inedible -- very sad! The chimichanga was just as delicious. I'd play it cautious and order their chimichanga if you visit them; it's the best chimichanga I've had in Taipei.
