Eel Dishes Kyoto House 鰻料理京都屋 was established in 1992. Their primary draw is unadon (eel rice bowl). The eel is slathered with a teriyaki-like sauce, barbecued, and placed over rice. Kyoto House makes a good unadon. They also offer other creative dishes involving eel, as well as tempura, sashimi, and other items.
I will compare their restaurant to Fei Qian Wu 肥前屋 because they are located really close to each other and serve similar dishes. I thought the taste and quality of the eel was about the same at either place, but some of my friends whom dined with me thought that Fei Qian Wu's eel was a little better. The eel is about the same price at either—Kyoto House is only NT$20 more. When it comes to many other items on the menu, Kyoto House is more expensive than Fei Qian Wu because Kyoto House offers more quality and sophisticated choices besides unadon; whereas Fei Qian Wu was designed to suit a cheaper dining experience. Kyoto House also has a plethora of sake and liquor choices (also beer); whereas Fei Qian Wu sticks to the bare-bones basics. Another huge difference between the two is that Kyoto House has normal restaurant seating on the ground floor and more traditional-style seating in the basement, typically for larger groups, like our group was—which was fortunate for us because the traditional-style seating is much better and special; the atmosphere in the basement is more relaxed and seems like a different restaurant all together compared to the ground floor. Fei Qian Wu has very loud cafeteria-style seating where you often share a table with other patrons.
To sum it up: Kyoto House is more of a typical restaurant, with aspects (basement traditional-style seating and huge liquor selection) going above a typical restaurant. Fei Qian Wu is a cheaper cafeteria-style place where you eat and leave without lingering around a bit more to chat. They're both good places for unadon and other dishes, it just depends on which type of dining experience you feel like having.
