In the underground shopping mall and market of Taipei City Mall, one can find a Duroyal Ice Cream 杜老爺冰淇淋 vender between exits Y22 and Y26. You can walk there from Taipei Main Station, but it's much closer to Beimen MRT Station (北門站). If you come from Beimen Station, just follow the signs for Taipei City Mall, you'll start at Y28 when you get to the underground mall, and it's only a short walk to the ice cream shop from there. It's on the right side of the two divided underground lanes of the long mall. Duroyal is a Taiwanese brand. I wasn't expecting anything great because I've bought Duroyal ice cream at the supermarket and different Duroyal ice cream bars at convenience stores before and was always completely disappointed. Duroyal ice cream that is sold at supermarkets taste similar to freeze-dried ice cream that astronauts eat; it's way too dry tasting with only a little moisture and no creaminess. The expiration date spans two years! That tells you how artificial it is. Now that I've completely trashed Duroyal's ice cream at supermarkets and convenience stores, which it rightfully deserves, I'll talk about the Duroyal ice cream that I recommend.
Duroyal's fresh ice cream sold at the vender location tastes comparable to that of a generic grocery store brand's ice cream in America, which still tastes great compared to most ice cream in Taiwan. It's a completely different product than Duroyal's ice cream at supermarkets and convenience stores; the ingredients are entirely different -- don't even compare the two, they have nothing to do with each other. It's far from Häagen-Dazs, but it's satisfying. It only costs NT$25 for one scoop and NT$35 for two scoops, and their scoops are big. You can get the scoops in a cup or in a waffle cone. By the way, it's a proper waffle cone that tastes good, but on really hot days, you may want to opt for the cup in order to avoid the dripping annoyance. They have 40 flavors to choose from. I would choose this Duroyal Ice Cream vender over Cold Stone any day, given the price, and the taste is not too different either, as Cold Stone's quality is overrated.
There is also a Meiji ice cream vender between the two said exits for almost double the price of Duroyal's. Personally, I don't think much of Meiji ice cream, which is a Japanese brand. It tastes too dry -- not creamy enough. Even if they were the same price, I would purchase Duroyal's ice cream regardless.
Please bare in mind that I'm only recommending Duroyal at venders, where the ice cream is fresh and isn't sold in a container. I really don't recommend Duroyal ice cream and ice cream bars sold at supermarkets and convenience stores; I don't even consider it to be ice cream.
