The owner/chef of Deer Pizza is a certified Neapolitan/Napoletana (Italian-style from Naples) pizza maker, so the pizza that Deer Pizza makes is authentically Italian. The only thing that deviates their pizza from being Italian (besides some of their unique pizza selections' toppings) is that they give you more cheese. I've noticed that this is an increasing trend for authentic Italian pizza in Taipei, and I have to say that I am an advocate for it; I even think that most Italians would either support it or not have a problem with it. Don't get me wrong, I love Italian-style pizza, but I sometimes feel like I'm being cheated out of cheese. Of course, that thought originates from my American background where cheese is amply given on pizza. Deer Pizza's margherita did have less cheese than their other pizza choices, but it still had more cheese than a typical Italian version -- again, I'm not complaining, I liked it better. Maybe it's time for Italians to add more cheese to their pizza? But I will always wholeheartedly agree with Italians on the matter of pineapple on pizza. Here's a funny clip that will show you how much of an abomination it is in the eyes of Italians to put pineapple on pizza: Italians' Reactions to Pineapple on Pizza.
On all my visits to Deer Pizza, the pizzas I received contained quality ingredients that tasted extremely fresh. They roll out the dough after your order and add olive oil to the pizza -- the true Italian way. Deer Pizza really knows what they're doing. I would say that Deer Pizza is probably the cheapest pizza I've had that possesses top-shelf quality. All their pizzas are 9" and the average pizza costs NT$240. There are definitely cheaper, good pizza places, but none of them come close to the quality and deliciousness of Deer Pizza's.
I didn't try their salad, but I can tell it's good just from looking at the pictures and having tried some of the same ingredients on their pizzas. I also didn't try their calzone, so I can't speak about it. Their sweet pizzas were good, but they weren't sweet enough for my Western palate, so in the future I'll stick with their normal pizza. If you're adventurous, you can try some of their unique pizza creations: Oslo (includes beetroot), Fisherman (includes fish eggs), and Three Egg (includes century eggs). I tried the two latter and thought they were good. Would I order them again? No, but that's not because they weren't good enough, it's because their other pizza choices are too delicious to pass up on any given visit. It's just an example of what I sacrifice in order to give a more thorough review to my followers. I don't make a penny from my website (purposefully), so why do I do it? Maybe I'm altruistic...or just an idiot who wastes his money. I'm both.
My favorite pizzas of theirs were: Fire, Meatism, Truffle, and Campania.
My only gripe is that they don't have crushed red chili peppers. They have cayenne pepper instead.
A shout-out to Karine Mazmanian and Karen Sargsyan for informing me about this great pizza joint. In fact, this isn't the first great place that my Ukrainian and Armenian aforementioned friends have shown me, so an extra big shout-out is warranted.
Vegetarian options: Margherita (NT$180), Ciambotta (NT$240), Three Egg (NT$240), Truffle (NT$260), Five Cheeses (NT$260), Banana & Chocolate (NT$240), Fruit Salad with Vinaigrette (NT$130), Nut Salad with Gorgonzola Dressing (NT$130), Roast Potato/Patata (NT$70), and Roast Vegetables (NT$150).
