What is the name of this place, you might be wondering. The Taipei Times said it was Cheese David so that must be correct, but you will not find that anywhere in their restaurant, only "Cheese Steaks" in English on their signs. Some Taiwanese restaurants do this, they have a set Chinese name but no set English name. Anyway, it is a three story fast food place that likes to use a lot of pump fake cheese. You order on the ground floor using their very limited menu, and receive a number on your receipt ticket which will be displayed on a digital board on all three floors so you can go get a seat and wait inside if there is a big wait; during rush time you may have to wait up to twenty minutes.
I tried the Cheesesteak, Philly Bacon Burger, Cheese Fries, and Cheese Cake. I watched them cook it up on a grill, just like a cheese steak should be cooked. I was surprised when I took my first bite and tasted the Philly cheese steak taste, olive/canola oil with salt and pepper. If you're going to compare this to an actual Philly cheese steak, the differences are: Cheese David doesn't use enough beef or high enough quality beef and their hoagie bread isn't quality bread or crispy. Amazingly enough, if they corrected these two things, this would be a good imitation of a Philly cheese steak in Taipei. However, this is a fast food place and this is a very good fast food rendition of a Philly cheese steak. Yes, you still need to fly to America for a real Philly cheese steak.
I am not a big fan of fake pump cheese, but some are better than others and their fake cheese on their crispy fries was quite yummy, but make sure you eat it before the cheese cools -- it loses its allure once no longer warm. Their was nothing special about the beef pattie that they use for their burgers, but the other aspects included in the burger lifted it into tasty territory. They grill the bun on the same grill as the Philly cheesesteak, giving it the same flavor, which is why they add "Philly" in the title. The bacon, onions, tomato, and lettuce are all quality and fresh. They also use real cheese for the burger which is nice. There is also some kind of small amount of sauce, maybe mayonnaise based, on the bottom of the burger that goes along nicely with the Philly cheesesteak flavor on the buns. If the beef pattie was quality, this would be a really good fast food burger, but it is still tasty and pleasing, regardless.
I was again surprised by the cheese cake dessert. Its denseness was medium level, not airy cake or thick style, and was creamy with a very powerful cheese flavor. If a cheese cake doesn't have that powerful cheese taste, it is not a proper cheese cake, and Cheese David got it right. Very good quality cheese cake for a fast food place, I must say.
Vegetarian options: Nothing but dessert (Cheesecake & Brownies) and sides (fries, cheese fries, & Mozzarella Cheese Sticks).
