I had been recommended this place by a couple people before, but it wasn't until my friend Prashantha recommended this place to me that I decided to give Amma's Kitchen a try, since Prish definitely knows her shit. Her knowing her shit totally benefited me: this place was excellent! Amma's Kitchen is different than most Indian restaurants in Taipei, and not just because they serve Southern Indian cuisine that includes items that most other Taipei Indian places don't have: dosa, banana-leaf meal, and idly; but because it's more like food from mom's kitchen, homemade food that's fresh and full of flavor.
Before I tell you why Amma's Kitchen deserves a 5-star rating and why it's one of my favorite places in Taipei to get Indian food, I'll tell you that there are some items of theirs that I didn't like. I wouldn't say they're a hit-and-miss place, because that would infer that close to half of their dishes are good and bad; rather, there were only a few items of theirs that I thought failed: their biryani, egg curry, and one of their chicken specials (Chicken 65). Everything else that I had at Amma's Kitchen was delicious to fucking-phenomenal. The former issue is the only reason I wasn't able to give them a golden rating (my highest rating); aforementioned issue also surmises that other dishes of theirs I haven't tried yet could also be flops.
The reason why Amma's Kitchen is one of my favorite places in Taipei for Indian food is because their curry is packed with spices that make it possess a nuance of rich, spicy flavors that I haven't experienced in any other Indian food place in Taiwan; they don't skimp when it comes to spices and flavor. That's why their name is quite fitting: it really is like food that would come out of a mom's kitchen, in that it's packed with spices—mom never skimps your flavors in order to make a quick buck off you. Also, it's a homey atmosphere with great service.
I was about to say that they serve their dishes with the authentic spiciness levels for each dish, but I can't remember if someone in my first-visiting party expressed that we like it spicy or if it came that way without specifying, and they remembered my preference on both my following visits. Anyway, I love how they aren't afraid to serve it with its authentic spiciness level, which is quite spicy for some of the dishes—we loved that! I think it should always be done this way, and you should have to specify that you don't want it spicy if you can't take the heat, instead of the other way around, like how Indian restaurants normally do it in Taipei. Also, it's important to note that their spicy dishes aren't just spicy in regards to flavor and what you can taste; as I said, you can taste a nuance of flavors in their dishes, even the really spicy dishes. This is a sign of gourmet Indian food; you should always be able to taste other pleasing flavors besides spiciness in spicy curries.
Their banana-leaf meal is special because it's hard to find in Taipei. It's also nicely priced (for Taipei) and will leave you full and satisfied—trust me. Keep in mind that you have to pre-order it at least one day in advance with your reservation. As it's marked on the first page of the menu, you also have to pre-order samosas and [Indian] spring rolls. They don't have much seating, so it would behoove you to make a reservation instead of just rocking up. Both their dosa and idly are quite expensive given that the ingredients to make those items are very cheap, but they make them correctly and they're tasty, so if you don't mind flipping the bill, you'll be rewarded.
