7-Eleven
I Recommend ☆☆☆☆
Convenience store in Taipei offering: Tea & Coffee / Drinks / Hot Dogs / Hamburgers / Bakery / Slurpee / Chips / Ramen Noodles / Steamed Buns / Oden / Alcohol / Books / Comics / China Trust ATM / Pig's Blood Rice / sometimes Bathroom & seating area / the list goes on and on
7-11 has tons of snack, quick meal, and drink options. I read on Wikipedia that Taiwan has the most convenience stores per square inch mile than any other country in the world. They are everywhere and sometimes right across the street from each other, making a visit to a convenience store very convenient. 7-Eleven offers all kinds of services that will blow your mind: you can pay your water, electricity, gas, cable, or mobile phone bill, parking tickets, motor-bike liability insurance, photo development, digital image printing and copying, MRT and bus-fare cards, fax, express mail, stamps, envelopes, send mail, receive mail, vacuum cleaner rental, and other crazy things I don't remember. Nielsen ShopperTrends says that 80% of urban household shoppers in Taiwan visit a convenience store each week.
There are so many options for tea and other drinks that you'll be overwhelmed until you find out your favorites. They have cold drinks, hot drinks, and drinks from a machine such as matcha green tea or latte. The snack and meal options are quite plentiful as well. A lot of 7-Elevens have seating areas or City Cafe sections where one can study, read a paper, eat their 7-11 food or drink, and chat. My favorite snacks/meals at 7 (which is the short name that Taiwanese have given 7-11) are their seaweed rice triangle, grass jelly dessert, hard boiled eggs soaked in black tea and spices for hours (茶葉蛋), seaweed chips, and Morinaga Ice Cream (and the caramel version which is easier to find). They usually ask you if you want your item warmed up in the microwave if the product your buying is meant to be hot and you're going to eat it pronto.
You can get a sticker booklet at 7-Eleven and save up your stickers for collectible items or deals at restaurants and stores (8 stickers needed to redeem them). For every so many Taiwanese Dollars you spend (NT$77 at time of this posting) you get a sticker. When you get 10 stickers, you can get one of the current promotions at 7-11 (one of the videos below talks about this).
I recommend 7-Eleven for its convenience and diverse selection. Of course, drinks and meals are better in specialized places, but when you don't have the time, 7-11 can be very convenient.

It isn't hard to find a 7-Eleven in Taipei, but just for fun, check out this map which shows some of the 7-11 locations in Taiwan according to Google Maps (every red dot). There are over 4,800 locations in Taiwan. |
This video takes place in a FamilyMart convenience store, not a 7-11. You're not suppose to bring your scooter into a convenience store, but the fact that no one was that alarmed by it shows how Taiwanese go almost everywhere on their scooters.
The Misadventures in Taiwan Podcast on the left talks about 7-11's sticker promotion, and on the right is a crazy Taiwanese 7-11 commercial.
